Batman and Robin

Movie, 1997

125 minutes

Story:

Batman and Robin try to keep their relationship together even as they must stop Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from freezing Gotham City.

Trailer:

Why is the movie in my Hall of Fame?

Well, because of a little over 4 minutes of the runtime. In these 4 minutes, Batgirl can be seen on the screen.

As I watched this movie in the cinema in 1997 I was immediately stunned by that AWESOME costume of Batgirl.

Yeah, she only has an eye mask as Alicia Silverstone didn’t wanna wear the cowl for all of her scenes. So she had it only in that short action scene where she is on a Batbike.

But the rest of the costume is still my favorite superheroine costume of all time. The great mixture of black rubber and leather is fantastic! The boots are also great, even they are not exactly realistic for a crime fighter 😉

They used a similar costume in Birds of Prey for Batgirl (Entry 1 here in the Hall of Fame).

I wish she could have had a longer screen time but these 4 minutes are pure GOLD for me!

Maskrippers opinion:

Mask action

(partially self-unmasking)

Well, she discards her cowl as soon they arrive at Mr. Freeze’s telescope for no reason.

Completely unlogical as her costume change. In the scene with Poison Ivy (played by the great Uma Thurman), she had an all-black costume. They move on to the telescope and suddenly she has a silver eye mask, a silver belt, and a silver bat on her chest. I heard that costume change was made to have a different version of toy figurines to sell to the kids/collectors. Really odd.

Story

The movie was colorful as hell and continued the legacy of the first Schuhmacher Batman movie “Batman Forever”. I like the villains in this one much better, Mr. Freeze (Schwarzenegger) and Poison Ivy were a good choice in my eyes. The poor Bane was more like a butler for Poison Ivy in this one….

Personally, I like the darker atmosphere like in the Burton movies much better. This was too much comedy, too colorful, too insane.

Mask(s)

A regular eye mask. Perhaps a little bigger than the average one but still an eye mask that hides far too little.

Rest of the costume

The costume itself is still my favorite superheroine costume of all time!

The great mixture of black rubber and leather is fantastic! The boots are also great, even they are not exactly realistic for a crime fighter 😉

They used a similar costume in Birds of Prey for Batgirl (Entry 1 here in the Hall of Fame).

If I ever become a movie producer and/or fetish video producer…..the costume of the heroine would be pretty similar to this one!

Actress

Batgirl/Barbara Wilson played by Alicia Silverstone

Every comic fan knows Barbara Gordon. I never fully understood why they used a Barbara Wilson in this one. Guess because they wanted her to be related to Alfred in the movie (as her niece).

Well, Alicia wasn’t very happy with her role and claimed years later that this role had severely damaged her career. Also, she wasn’t happy with the shortly used cowl and wasn’t happy with her costume…as you can easily see on some promo pictures and hear on the extras of the Blu-ray.

I think she was somewhat ok in the role, but I wished they had chosen somebody else for the role and that EPIC costume.
